Abstract: This study investigates the role of Google Search Volume Intensity (GSVI) in explaining excess stock returns in the Vietnamese equity market during the period 2020-2024, and compares differences between the pandemic and post-pandemic phases of COVID-19. By extending Fama-French five-factor model and using a dataset of more than 15,000 observations collected from Vietstock and Google Trends, the analysis employs Pooled Ordinary Least Squares (POLS). The results show that the coefficient of GSVI is positive and statistically significant in both phases, providing evidence in support of the investor-attention hypothesis. Higher information-search activity is associated with rising stock prices and reflects the optimistic sentiment of retail investors in this frontier market. The study contributes to expand the new empirical evidence on the impact of digital information-driven investor behavior, while also offering implications for investors and market regulators.
